The development of functional oxides for energy conversion applications such as electrolyser and fuel cell electrodes, and electrolytes relies on detailed knowledge of the relationship between structure, stability and ionic transport. Of these perhaps the most challenging to unambiguously determine is the ionic transport of oxide ions
and protons. To achieve this we use isotopic labelling with tracer species, combined with secondary ion mass spectrometry to determine mass transport parameters. Here we will discuss the application of this technique to a range of samples, and provide examples of exciting recent developments in the areas of both proton and oxide ion
conductors.
