Seminar - HelixJet: plasma source for synthesis of new materials

Self-organized phenomena in plasma at atmospheric pressure are spectacular wonders. The lecture gives an insight from the perspective of plasma physics, how the regular regimes of gas discharge can be stabilized and controlled, and how this knowledge can be used for the technological development of modern plasma sources in practice. A new type of plasma jet - HelixJet [1] – will be presented and its use in additive manufacturing (3D printing) and for nanotechnology will be discussed. The HelixJet is a capacitively coupled high frequency plasma with a double helix electrode configuration that generates a surprisingly stable and homogeneous glow plasma at low flow rates of argon and its mixtures at atmospheric pressure. Current results from high-speed infrared (IR) thermography, scanning electron microscopy, IR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as well as the modelling of electrical and temperature fields will be shown in the context of technological applications.
