The outer atoms of a surface largely control processes such as catalysis, growth, adhesion and electron emission. Low-Energy Ion Scattering is widely known as a technique that can selectively analyze these outer atoms. The information depth of LEIS is limited by scattering, neutralization and reionisation processes. To benefit from the better mass resolution (separate isotopes and nearest neighbours in the periodic system), higher primary energies are often used. However, till which energy is the selectivity for the outer atoms still guaranteed?

A popular and powerful procedure of sample cleaning is based on the use of atomic oxygen. Is this procedure always simple?
