Abstract:

Quantum dots can be realized in various semiconductors, starting from GaAs, to Si to even graphene. In these systems electrons are confined in all three dimensions and behave like artifical atoms. The quantum dots have a discrete energy spectrum that is filled following Pauli’s principle and possible exchange effects. The energy spectrum of quantum dots can be investigated by transport experiments, as well as by optics. Several qubit implementations have been proposed. In this talk I will give an overview on how these quantum dots are technologically realized and what qubit implementations are possible.
